SDG 16 REPORT – PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

Saint Mary’s University (SMU) demonstrates a profound, structural commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by embedding principles of accountability, integrity, and civic engagement throughout its governance and operations.
The University maintains strong and accountable institutions through systems that ensure broad representation in its highest governing body and formally recognizes an independent student union. It operates with a strong mandate for transparency and anti-corruption, upholding comprehensive, publicly available policies covering academic freedom, anti-bribery, and freedom of information, which are reinforced by clear whistleblower protection and due process mechanisms. This effective governance framework ensures institutional integrity.
Furthermore, SMU contributes directly to the justice sector by graduating professionals in law and civil enforcement-related fields. Externally, the University acts as a critical hub for fostering peaceful and inclusive societies by providing a neutral and secure platform for various political stakeholders and community members to engage in open dialogue, thereby promoting transparency, democratic participation, and informed civic life.
