Legal Aid, Consultation Held for PWDs in Nueva Vizcaya

In celebration of Linggo ng Lingkod at Likha 2024, Saint Maary’s University Lingkod Maria Community Development and Advocacy Center (LMCDAC), in partnership with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Region 2, conducted a legal aid and consultation for persons with dsiabilities (PWDs) on April 26.
Aiming to empower PWDs by promoting awareness of their rights and ensuring access to legal services and opportunities, legal professionals, including Atty. Rory Valera and Atty. Cecilia Melad-Lazaro, volunteered their expertise to consult community members iof different local government units, addressing concerns from members of the PWD community.
The program formally opened with introductions by moderator Laurice Kaye P. Laguinday, followed by a prayer, the national anthem, and welcome remarks from Rev. Fr. Philip A. Yu Jr., CICM, Vice President for Mission and Identity. Fr. Yu emphasized the importance of compassion and inclusivity in community service.
Moreover, CHR Region 2 Director Atty. Jimmy P. Baliga, CPA, delivered a message on the significance of human rights awareness and encouraged active participation in promoting inclusivity along with a discussion on CHR’s role in supporting PWDs and ensuring their rights are upheld.
Furthermore, Atty. Melad-Lazaro later conducted a seminar on the rights and privileges of PWDs, explaining relevant laws and benefits available to them. This was followed by an open discussion where participants raised questions about government programs and accessibility to services.
